Herbert Harry ANDREWS and Susannah Emma JONES
My Great Grandparents
Herbert Harry ANDREWS (1860-1922), son of Henry ANDREWS (c.1833-1895) and Laura Susan SHOESMITH (1838-1927), was born on 28 June 1860 in Cardigan St, Nth Melbourne, Victoria.
Susannah Emma JONES (1863-1941), daughter of Charles Joseph JONES (1835-1905) and Emma Jane NEWBERY (1841-1900), was born on 22 November 1863 in Bullinaming St, Waterloo, NSW. |

Herbert was a Stone Mason, a Cricket Grounds Caretaker and a first grade cricket umpire.
Herbert and Susannah were married on 9 June 1883 at the residence of the Rev. E. Adams, Pitt St, Redfern, NSW according to the rites of the Congregational Church and in the presence of her parents, Charles and Emma Jones. At the time Herbert was living in Alexandria and working as a Stone Mason. Susannah was living in Waterloo.
On 16 February 1900, Herbert aged 39, was admitted to the Hospital for the Insane at Parramatta for attempting to hang himself with his braces. See transcript of Extracts from his Hospital File.
On 30 August 1901, The Orange Grove Lodge of Druids, held a successful Benefit Social in the Parramatta Masonic Hall for the family of Brother Herbert Andrews. It was reported in The Cumberland Argus and Fruitgrowers Advocate where it was stated that "Andrews is well known to the cricketing fraternity and the money is badly needed". See A Deserving Benefit and The Druids Social.
On 19 January 1902, while Herbert was still a patient in the Hospital for the Insane, his wife Susannah gave birth, at the Lodge House, Parramatta Park, to a daughter whom she named Eva Eileen Andrews (later changed to Jones). Susannah, named the father as David J White, a friend of Herberts, who used to visit her to enquire about his friend's health. David strongly denied he was the father.
After spending almost 2½ years in the hospital, Herbert was discharged in mid 1902 and on 23 June 1902, Herbert filed for divorce on the grounds of his wife's adultery, with David White named as co-respondent. See transcript of Divorce Record : Andrews v Andrews 1902.
Divorce in 1902 was scandalous and the sordid details that were revealed in court were widely reported in the Sydney newspapers. The Andrews family must have been ashamed and embarrassed and Susannah the talk of Parramatta.

Herbert and Susannah were divorced on 2 March 1903 and Herbert was granted full custody of the children. Susannah was forbidden to see her children but from time to time her oldest daughter Florence would sneak the younger ones to see her. My grandmother, Mona who was seven at the time of the divorce, missed her mother dreadfully. Older sister Aimee went to live with their grandma, Laura Susan Andrews and she had a happy childhood. See letter from Aimee. By contrast, Mona and her sisters, Cora and Nellie had a rather bleak childhood being raised by their step-mother.
I feel terribly sorry for Susannah - what choices did she have? Her husband was in the Hospital for the Insane for over two years so how did she support herself and her seven children? I believe she did what she had to do. It must have been unbelievably tough.
Susannah's daughter Eva Eileen (known as Eileen) spent most of her childhood in an orphanage and her existence was kept a secret from most of the family. My grandmother, Mona never told her children about Eileen and I only discovered her when I obtained Susannah's Death Certificate and Eva Eileen was listed as one of her children. My mother, Margaret and her sister Gwen, were shocked to learn that their mother had kept this secret from them.
Towards the end of her life, Susannah lived in a one room flat in Victoria Rd, Drummoyne (near Birkenhead Point). According to my mother, Susannah was a grumpy old lady who used to prod her grandchildren with her walking stick if they went near her gramophone. My grandmother, Mona said her mother, Susannah had had a very hard life.
