Frederick Shoesmith & Henrietta Susan Fletcher
My 3rd Great Grandparents
Frederick SHOESMITH (c.1810) married Henrietta Susan FLETCHER (1816-1877) on 30 April 1837 at St Lawrence Jewry, London. The witnesses were family members James Shoesmith, Laura Fletcher and Henry Thwaits. I believe that James Shoesmith was Frederick's brother and Henry Thwaits was Frederick's brother-in-law. Henry Thwaits had married Mary Ann Shoesmith in 1834 at St James Jewry. James Shoesmith married Frances Cogswell at St Lawrence Jewry in 1836 with Henry Edward Thwaits and Mary Ann Thwaits as witnesses. Another possible brother Thomas Shoesmith married Mary Ann Shephard at St Lawrence Jewry in 1835 and his witnesses were Mary Ann Thwaits and Henry Edward Thwaits.
Henrietta Susan was baptised Susan Henrietta when she was 14 years old on 16 March 1831 at St James, Clerkenwell, Middlesex, England. Her birthday was recorded as 31 May 1816. Her mother was Susan Fletcher and no father was recorded.
Frederick was born around 1810 but as no record recording his age can be found this is just a guess. DNA matching to me and other relatives suggests he descends from Shoesmith's living in Sussex.
Frederick had various occupations during his lifetime. In March 1838 he was working as an Ironmonger (a shopkeeper who sells hardware such as tools and household implements) in Epping, Essex. In 1839 he is living in Holborn Hill, London where he was a Corn Chandler (a retailer of grain and allied products). This venture failed and on 23 November, 1839 he was mentioned in The Jurist, Vol 3 page 1063. No. 150 - London, as an Insolvent Debtor "Frederick Shoesmith, High Holborn, Shopman: in the Debtors Prison for London and Middlesex".
On 27 Feb 1841 he appears in the London Gazette p.592: "Frederick Shoesmith, late of No. 127 Holborn-hill, Middlesex, Corn Chandler, an Insolvent"
On 3 March 1841 the Morning Herald (London) reported:
When Frederick was in the Debtor's Prison, Henrietta went to Bristol, Gloucestershire to have her baby Rosetta Elizabeth. She was there for the birth on 16 Nov until at least 27 Dec 1841 when she registered the birth. Rosetta was born at St James' Churchyard where they were staying. On 31 Oct 1843 when Emma Amelia was born the family were living at 74 Broadwall St, St Saviour Christchurch, Surrey. Frederick's was an Ironmonger.
On 9 Jan 1850 when Ann Isabella was born they were living at Gateshead, Durham and Frederick was a Fitter.
In the English Census taken on 30 March 1851, Henrietta, aged 33 and their children, Laura 12, Henrietta 10, Rosetta 8, Mary 6 and Frederick 4, were living as lodgers at 57 James Street, St Marylebone, Middlesex, England. Henrietta was working as a Laundress. When Ann Isabella died on 21 May 1851 they were still at this address. Frederick was not with them and a census entry cannot be found for him.
Later that year on 3 September, Frederick, Henrietta and their children departed London via Plymouth on aboard the barque "Abberton" as steerage passengers. They arrived in Melbourne, Australia on 23 December, 1851. The arrival of the ship was reported in The Argus (Melbourne).
In Melbourne, Frederick became a Veterinary Surgeon, Locksmith and Bell Hanger and placed the following advertisements in The Argus newspaper:

In July 1857 when his daughter Laura Susan was married, Frederick was working as a Confectioner. At the marriages of his other daughters Clara Alice in 1866 and Charlotte in 1873 his occupation was described as "Gentleman".
No further record can be found of Frederick, he seems to have vanished into thin air.
Henrietta died aged 54 of Chronic Hepatitis lasting 3 months on 25 July 1877 in Hoddle St, Collingwood, Vic. The informant was friend Charles Andrews, Hairdresser of 228 Wellington St. Collingwood. Charles was the brother of Henrietta's son-in-law, Henry Andrews. She was buried on 26 July 1877 in the Melbourne Cemetery, Vic.
Henrietta's death was reported on 31 October 1877 in The Illustrated Australian News, Melbourne, Vic, p.175
